My interview with title contending French Lick...

#1 - what would it mean to win your 1st JBL title?

I don't want to say too much here because I don't want to piss off the JBL God's at all, but it would mean alot. With a JBL championship comes presitge. Winning a Green Jacket is the closest comparison.

#2 - Who do you think is your biggest challenger to the title?

Honestly, it has to be Juan. Golden could very easily win it aswell if a few guys get hot but I think Juan is in the drivers seat. Very deep team.

#3 - why do you think Seoul is in title contention every year?

I have no idea. I'm puzzled with what Seoul does year in year out with the lack of talent that he usually has. It's the JBL's version of "The Secret."

#4 - what happened to the Brussels team this season?

A few injuries early to Zach and EG. One bad decision right away not to deal Dorell Wright for Javale McGee when he had the chance. It really spiralled out of control quickly on him. It's too bad, it always bums me out when Timmy gives up on a fantasy season... Yes, it happens alot!

#5 - would you like to see a 14th team added to the JBL next season? Why or why not?

Sounds like a good idea. 13 is an odd number.

#6 - what were your best 3 moves/trades/FA's you made this year?

Obviously the keeper deadline deal with Tuna stands out as the most important. I wouldn't have had the chance to contend with the team I had. I got a text from tuna after we made that deal, (which took ALOT of haggling) reading "I feel like I just got beatn up and robbed"... lol. Love that. Other than that, I was really happy with the Gooden pick up. He carried me for stretches. The other one was the Aldridge for Curry deal. I guess Timmy woke up one morning and decided he wanted to go small and offered that deal (with no prior communication at all). Needless to say I clicked accept as fast as I could. Sorry Timbo.

#7 - who will finish higher next year - Idaho or Brussels? Why?

At this point, it's got to be Idaho. He's stacked with keepers. A strong Brussels comeback wouldn't surprise me, but Idaho is in better shape right now (at least until he screws it up).

#8 - who do you think the top 5 keepers are for next season? (all teams)

1. Bynum (not close)

After that there are a bunch of good ones... Gortwat, Ibaka, Rubio, Ilyasova, Ryan Anderson, Ty Lawson (gotta have some of my guys on here!) come to mind first. Then there is DeAndre Jordan, James Harden, Pekovic, Javale, maybe Sessions if he stays a Laker... I really can't remember who else is cheap right now. Oh, Greg Stiemsma! The Stiemmer is primed for a huge year!

#9 - which of the 7 categories is least important in your mind?

I typically ignore ato altogether... which makes it kind of odd that I'm currently 1st in ato. I guess I just assume im supposed to have point guards on my team and I leave it up to them to handle things!

#10 - where would you like to see the 22nd JBL Auction held?

Portland! Embassy Suites! Honestly, the JBL roadie earlier this year was just a fantastic trip all around. Portland has it all. I couldn't stop talking up the Embassy Suites once I got back. This needs to be experienced by all.

The Kok Speaks...

Here is my interview with the Kok...

#1 - What happened in Bangkok this season? You were coming off one of the best 2nd place finishes of all time - and then you have this season? What went wrong?

Poor draft night - was hesitant to pull the trigger on big bids. Exhibited stubbornness in keeping clowns like Jon Leuer in the lineup hoping for miracles. Caught a reasonable injury bug - particularly the ones that are unknown as of Mon am (I recognize I wasn't the only one to suffer this). Got sloppy with checking the waiver wires once I fell out of contention and my wife decided to get a dog to add to my insomnia.

#2 - Does Bangkok plan on bringing anyone back from this roster for next season? Who?

Most likely no keepers.

#3 - What's your take on how the Rookie Lottery worked this year?

Rookie lottery is a bit of a crap shoot - but overall ok with it I guess.

#4 - Why is Seoul always in the running for the JBL title every year?

Seoul is old and wily just like his team

#5 - If you had to do it again - would you have traded Rondo/Bosh/Milicic for Dwight Howard & CJ Miles?

f I could have done it all over again I never would have drafted Darko and would have gotten something better than CJ Miles had I thrown in someone other than Darko

#6 - Besides Seoul and Juan de Fuca - who is your biggest rival in the JBL? Why him?

The Wack followed by Golden

#7 - Do you feel you did all you could to compete for the JBL title this season? Were there some moves you wished you had made? Like what?

If Gallinari is healthy, the Lamarcus deal for him and Wall is ok. Gallinari was not healthy - but neither was Rudy for a long stretch.

#8 - Who is going to win the title this year? Why?

Juan's luck will continue and they will win through that alone (not acumen).

#9 - What's your take on what went on in Brussels this season?

Brussels jettisoned his team and I just wish I was one of his pals so that I could have been on the receiving end of that.

#10 - You had offered Jared Dudley for Tim Duncan early in the season and thought this was a good trade for the Wack. Were you serious?? (Question from the Wack)

Ol man Duncan has surpassed all expectations this year - so the deal seemed ok at the time.

An Interview with Chilliwack...

Well, here is the first interview with owner of the Chilliwack Off's franchise Benny P. Let's see what Benny had to say...

#1 - Now in 5th place - what's the biggest reason for your fall from #1?

Well, I know it is not a good excuse in the real sports, but in fantasy sports injuries are a killer. Its not like the real world where somone else takes those minutes. When you lose Derrick Rose for 20 games and Kyle Lowry from 15 games, those are 700 points that you don't get back (gross). I probably would be around the 1000 point mark if I didn't lose these guys. Someone could say that we all have injuries, but I had as many injuries as everyone else prior to these guys going down. They are both back so I could make a return to a money spot, but I think the damage is done.

#2 - Who do you like as keepers from your team?

The keeper question is a good one. I think both Rose and Lowry are both worth more than their sticker tag. I might consider Lowry at $36. I might even consider Rose at $58. As bad as McGee has been in Denver, I still think that he has loads of potential. I will definitely be keeping him. Paul George is sticking around too.

#3 - Which other JBL team's success/failure has surprised you the most this year?

Tim's failure has been the biggest surprise. I didn't expect him to win, but you don't spend that much time preparing and then be the all time worst team in JBL history. Shocking.

I don't see anyone catching Juan. It is nice to see him back.

#6 - Can you describe what it means to be the highest placing Pershick?

It's like playing in the Southwest Division of the NHL

Well, Chris and Tim like to outsmart themselves all the time and Tuna doesn't try and outsmart anyone. I call it a pick 'em.

#8 - Will Bangkok ever win a JBL title? Why or why not?

No, he will never win. He is the Chicago Cubs of the JBL.

#9 - Who are the top 5 players to own on your JBL team?

My Top 5 are Dwight, Lebron, Josh Smith, KD, and CP3

#10 Where should the JBL hold it's 22nd Annual JBL Auction? Why there?

Easter Review...

So, it's Sunday morning, the Easter Bunny has come and gone. I'm having a coffee and looking at the JBL Standings. It's been years since I've seen a title race this close. 5 teams are still in contention. Each and every 3 pointer made and missed right now can move a team up or down in that category. As I've said here before - I think 3PT% will be the determining factor on who wins this puppy.

So, thought I would have a look at each teams' chances of winning the title.

Let's start with Juan de Fuca. Currently at 1012 points. Let's see if they can gain points in certain categories or are at risk of losing points.

Juan de Fuca (1012 points)

3PT% - looks like they will finish 1st here - +/- no points

PTS - currently 1st - I think they will finish either 1st or 2nd. Could lose -20 points.

ATO - no movement anticipated.

STL - Idaho and Yuma closing in. Could lose -26 points

BLK - just 9 blocks back of French - could gain +13 points

REB - no movement anticipated

FG% - in a dog fight with French and Golden - could gain +13 pts or lose -13pts.

So, overall - I think Juan can move up another 26 points or they could lose 59 points.

Golden (1003 points)

3PT% - Could gain +39 points or lose -39 points

PTS - could gain +20 points

ATO - could lose -13 points

STL - could lose -26 points

BLK - no movement expected

REB - no movement expected

FG% - could gain +26 points or could lose -13 points

Overall, room to go up +85 points or could lose -91 points

French Lick (996 points)

3PT% - could gain +26 points

PTS - could gain +20 points or lose -20 points in the short term. (could gain +40 long term)

ATO - could gain +13 points (just .005 behind Seoul)

STL - could gain +26 points (5 back of Seoul; 10 back of Golden)

BLK - Juan just 9 blocks back - could lose -13 points

REB - Yuma just 20 rebs behind - could lose -15 points

FG% - could gain +13 points or lose -26 points

Overall, could gain +98 points or lose -74 points

Seoul (955 points)

3PT% - +13 or -13 - just 0.1 ahead and behind teams

PTS - no movement

ATO - could lose -13 points - French on his tail

STL - +13 or -13 as he's sandwiched between Golden and French

BLK - appears no movement

REB - could gain +15 as he's just 10 rebs behind Arctic

FG% - Already 1st - doesn't appear to be in danger of dropping

Overall, could move up +41 points while he could drop -39 points.

Chilliwack (882 points)

3PT% - could gain +78 points if he got hot from downtown. Can't drop any further.

PTS - could gain +20 with the return of D Rose

ATO - +13 appears possible with the return of Rose and Lowry

STL - +13 appears possible. Unlikely to lose ground

BLK - could lose -13 points due to Arctic's rise

REB - already 1st - no movement expected

FG% - appears locked in for 2nd place in FG%.

Overall, could move up +124 points if everything went perfectly. Could lose -13 points in blocks. At worst, Benny's at 869 and in no apparent danger of dropping out of the top 5.

And finally, since the season is almost over, I thought I would take the opportunity to conduct 'interviews' of JBL owners on their seasons. So, you may be getting an email from me with some questions. If you have a couple of minutes - please answer them and send them back. I'll post them on here and on the site. Might be fun to get some others take on how their seasons went and their perspective on a few things.

Keeper Keepers Everywhere....

Thought I'd take a break from the JBL Standings and focus on some potential keepers that JBL teams will have to make a decision on...

13th - Brussels - no keepers because he's in last. But even if he could protect someone - I'm not sure there is anyone worth keeping. Anderson Varejao and Andrea Bargnani are OK values but could probably be had at Auction for similar prices. Besides, would you really want to keep them coming off such injury plagued years? Moving on...

12th - Maui - Trev has a couple of options. Nothing earth shattering by any means. Gerald Henderson ($1), Lou Williams ($3), Iman Shumpert ($1) and even Jordan Crawford ($1) have shown flashes of brilliance. A 12th place finish allows for one keeper. If I had to choose (and I do because I'm forcing myself) I would take Lou Williams and his 15ppg, solid 3PT% and 3:1 ATO.

11th - Manhattan Beach - There are a couple options here. Derrick Williams could be a decent starter next season for Minny but that's not for certain. And if I'm using up $17 dollars - I want to make sure of what I'm getting. So Williams is out. Bobby could look at Spencer Hawes for $7 bucks. He was having a great year until he got hurt. I believe he's a free agent after the season and could be somewhere other than Philly. That muddies the water so he's out. That leaves Lebron for $77 bucks. Is that a bargain? Maybe. Maybe not. But if you're a Heat fan and want to have a stud on your fantasy team - you may as well keep the guy. That's my call - Lebron will be MBB's one and only keeper.

10th - Arctic - 2 keepers for the Marcin Gortat look-a-like. As I've mentioned many times before - Arctic is loaded with potential values. Serge Ibaka and his 181 blocks (so far) is a guarantee for $14 bucks. Other choices include Ramon Sessions for $6 bucks (check out his Lakers stats); the Manimal Kenneth Faried for $11 bucks; and Derrick Favors for $13 bucks. I think the 2nd spot comes down to Faried or Sessions. I really love the potential of Faried (and he's eligible for 5 years because he was selected in the Rookie Lottery) but Sessions has also been awesome since joining the Lakeshow. Touch call Crikker.

9th - Montreal - duh, no brainer for one spot - Kyrie Irving. Again, check out these stats. 19ppg, 6ast, 4reb, 255/147ATO, 47 steals, 19 blocks and he's shooting 47/42. Holy cow. And he can be protected for just $20 bucks. And he's eligible for 5 years of protection because he was selected in the lottery. The 2nd and final spot is another tough one. It could be Jeremy Lin. It could be Marc Gasol. It could be Nicolas Batum. Or even Ekpe Udoh. I think Gasol is the most undervalued (even at $33 bucks) but Batum and Lin could be real nice pieces for their respective teams next season. And of course, keeping Lin could prove to be a valuable asset when trading with the Asian owners in the JBL.

8th - Idaho - 3 keepers for the kid. It appears it will Bynum, Rubio and Harden. DeAndre Jordan could get into the mix too because of his block potential. We saw what French did with a Bynum/Jordan pairing in the middle this season. Rubio provides the flash and dash and all those steals. And Bynum covers Rubio's poor shooting so that's a match made in heaven. The wild card in the mix could be Klay Thompson. The Warriors love this kid and since they traded Monta away the kid has averaged 18ppg. Not too shabby. But, barring major injuries and off season trades - I think we have a pretty good idea of who Idaho is keeping - at least two of them anyways.

7th - Bangkok - The Kok can protect up to 3 players but I'm not sure there are 3 values on this roster. Tony Parker is probably worth the $25 bucks for his scoring and ATO. After TP though, I'm not sure there are any other real value keepers. Rick could keep Dwight to $86 bucks but I'm not sensing that would be high on the list for the Kok to do this off season. Is Marcus Thornton a keeper for $20 bucks? Maybe. If you were related to him. At the end of the day, I would be very surprised to see Bangkok protect 3 players from this roster.

6th - Yuma - Chubby has a few guys I like for next season. Despite his poor %'s I like Brandon Jennings for just $22 bucks. He can score; has good ATO; and gets lots of steals. I also like Kris Humphries for $20 bucks. I believe he's a free agent and he could wind up somewhere other than New Jersey. Depending on where he lands - his value could take a hit. That being said - if he's a starter - he can get his rebounds. He is the #5 rebounder in the NBA!! I also like Kawhi Leonard's expanding role in San Antonio. Yes, he would be $10 bucks - but the Spurs aren't getting any younger and with Timmy D and Manu starting to 'coast' - Mr. Leonard could become the 2nd or 3rd scoring option very soon. And finally there's Paul Pierce. He would be $32 bucks and he'll be another year older. He's having a pretty good season and $32 could be stretching his price just a bit but....you never know.

5th - Chilliwack - Benny could be looking at 3 or 4 keepers but for tonight's article - he's in 5th - so I'll treat it like he only has the 3 spots. Awhile ago I was hyping Javale McGee has one of the best keepers in the entire league for just $21 bucks. But now, in Denver, he's already on thin ice and his value continues to drop. It will be interesting to see if Benny keeps him or will he try to trade him in the off season? Another budding star in the Wack is Paul George. I imagine he'll back for $8 bucks. He has become a 7 category man. Mario Chalmers for just $6 bucks could be a good keeper too but the possibility of the Heat bringing in someone like Steve Nash next season scares me away from Mario as a keeper. Of course, Benny could keep Blake for $59. That's probably what Blake is worth at Auction but maybe Benny would want to wrap him up now. Evan Turner for $8 bucks wouldn't be bad either. The playing time situation in Philly needs to get sorted out though before Turner becomes a lock. Touch decisions coming in the Wack.

4th - French Lick - The Legends could have 4 keeper spots with a top 4 finish and Hildy has plenty of options to fill those slots. I would expect Ty Lawson ($10), Ryan Anderson ($2) and Jeff Teague ($6) to be locks for 3 of the spots. That's some really good cheap talent right there. The 4th spot could go to a Drew Gooden ($1) or maybe even a LaMarcus Aldridge ($40). For Gooden it depends on what the Bucks think of Udoh and whether he could steal some minutes away from Drew next season. And LA12 could be a slight bargain at $45 bucks. But you never know, he could go for less at Auction. No matter who the 4th player is in the keeper ranks in French - he should be one of the favorites for next season.

3rd - Golden - The Showers squad is hoping to have his cake (win another JBL title) and eat it too (have 4 really good keepers for 2012/13). As mentioned, I'm going with a European flair with my keeper alotment. Golden will have Gortat, Ilyasova, and Pekovic for next season. The hopeful 4th spot could go to Isaiah Thomas based on his stats since he took over PG duties in Sactown. Loving this kid. Other options include Biyombo and maybe even Jared Dudley (just to make the Kok feel better about predicting Jared would average 16-5-5 this season).

2nd - Seoul - Phil will likely have 4 keeper spots and no one to fill them. As mentioned on the Scoreboard - he would consider James Johnson if he could secure the starting SF spot in Toronto and get some regular minutes. Other than JJ though - there isn't much there worth keeping for next season. Philly Woo has always been about the present and would have no problems starting from scratch next season. I'll predict that Woo wipes the slate clean and starts from scratch next year.

1st - Juan de Fuca - Juan will have 4 spots and no shortage of players to potentially fill them. Depending on how they want to construct their team for next season - the 3 headed Mgmt group could go with cheap guys (Dunleavy, Hayward, Knight) or they could protect established/emerging stars (Durant, Cousins, Chandler). Is Durant worth $72 bucks? Maybe. Is Cousins worth $39. Probably. Is Chandler worth $28 bucks at Auction. Again, probably. So, Juan could build around the same core that has them on the verge of a 2nd JBL title.

It will be interesting to see if all the JBL teams maximize their keeper space. A team like Seoul will likely have 4 keeper spots but end up using none of them. Will anyone else follow suit. Will other JBL teams make a run for someone else's top keepers? Will JBL teams being willing to trade a keeper for a lottery pick? Would you rather have a NBA veteran at a cheap price or take a chance on a young rookie in the Lottery. The summer should be fun....

Week 15 - April is Time to Shine...

So, here we go. The final month of the season. The final 3 weeks. We have one of the closest races ever in the history of the JBL. Let's break down the JBL standings. Here are some of the things I've noticed.

First of all, it certainly appears that teams 6th through 8th are locked in. Yuma, Bangkok and Idaho seem destined to finish here (barring miracles above and below). The Yuma vs. Bangkok rivalry will certainly heat up if Yuma finishes ahead of the Kok. Idaho, he of the great many keepers for next season, looks like he will finish in the top 8 and get his precious 3 keepers (Bynum, Rubio, Harden, Jordan?).

9th and 10th appears to be Arctic and Montreal. I don't see anyone falling or climbing around them. So, they will each get 2 keepers for next season. Tough one for Arctic as I think he has more than 2 value guys for next year. I can pretty much guarantee you one of those spots will be Serge Ibaka's. Montreal's dynamic duo will have to decide who gets their 2 spots. And will we see an expansion application from David Boucher to become the JBL's 14th team next season? We'll find out...

11th and 12th will go Manhattan Beach and Maui. Pretty sure in that order. 1 keeper each. Sounds like MBB will bring back Lebron while Maui can choose from his collection of cheap talent (Shumpert, Lou Williams, Gerald Henderson).

And our 13th place team will be Brussels. If Tim ever wanted to know what rock bottom was like - this is it. As he mentioned in a text to me - everyone loves a comeback. And that's what he's hoping for in 2012/13. He's hit the bottom and can only go up from here. He'll have no keepers and will have to start from scratch. Maybe that's the best thing for him. Not only has he hit 13th in the JBL standings- he's hit #4 in the Pershick Family Standings. That 2nd stat is probably the worse of the 2 options. Will Benny start subbing in the 'Brussels' name where he once used 'Idaho'??

And then we have our top 5 teams. Let's start with the Wack. Benny's squad has been devastated by injury. Losing Derrick Rose and Kyle Lowry to injury crushed his title hopes. He's currently at 895 points tonight and appears to be fading into the background of the title race. Benny does have some room to move in 3PT%, STL's and FG%. Looks like he could gain around 80 points. He could get back up to the 980 range. Would that be enough? Personally, I think it's gonna take at least 1000 points to win it.

The best category to watch over the next 3 weeks is going to be 3PT%. It's so tight and it changes so much every night. Juan appears to have 1st in this category locked up but Seoul, Wack, French and Golden all have HUGE points available to grab with some hot shooting. Some teams could gain 60+ points in this one category alone. It's such a key category that I played Wesley Mathews over Luis Scola this week just because of his 3PT potential. I believe this category will ultimate decide who wins the title.

ATO - French and Seoul are 1-2 in this category. That's a big 13 point swing for those teams if Seoul could catch French. And actually it's a 26 point swing. And Juan de Fuca is barely holding off Maui in this category right now (1.474 to 1.473). That's 13 points that Juan doesn't want to lose. The Wack and Golden appear to be treading water in this category and are unlikely to gain or lose any ground.

Blocks are another huge category. The Wack has been 1st all year but Seoul has slowly closed the gap. Can Seoul gain 13 points here?? But Seoul also has to be mindful of Serge Ibaka and those Arctic Circle Jerks. Arctic is now only 4 blocks behind Seoul!! Losing 13 points here would not sit well with Woo. And Golden, French and Juan are only separated by 19 blocks total. So, more points available here potentially.

As I type this - French, Golden and Juan are all shooting 45.8% on the year. Just fractions away from gaining or losing 13 points (or more). One missed or made shot can move us up or down in this category. It's insane. And above us, in 1st and 2nd, are Seoul and Chilliwack. Again, separated by 0.1%. The Wack could sure use those 13 points.

Juan, Golden and French are 1st, 2nd and 3rd in scoring now. Juan appears to have a comfortable lead but the way French has been scoring I'm thinking he could catch Golden and Juan and gain a big 40 points here and take the lead. Yuma and the Wack are very close in scoring and maybe, just maybe, Yuma could keep the pressure on in this category.

Again, the top 4 teams in the JBL standings are actually the top 4 teams in the steal category. It appears Seoul is the favorite to win this category as he's 8 steals ahead of Golden now. Golden is 5 steals ahead of Juan and Juan is 5 steals ahead of French. Overall, Seoul (1st) is only 18 steals ahead of French (4th). So, yes, that's a difference of 39 points for finishing 1st instead of 4th in this one category. French has been on fire in this category as of late and could challenge Seoul.

The rebounds category has been dominated by the Wack all year long. Juan is still a distant 2nd and I don't think they will catch him. On the bright side for Juan, I don't think any team will challenge their grasp on 2nd place in this category. Golden is 3rd in rebounds with Seoul, French and the surprising Arctic close behind. It was the surge from these 3 teams that made me go out and acquire Scola at the trade deadline. It was Nene's injury in Seoul that convinced me that I could play Mathews this week (4 games) over Scola (3 games). Had Nene been healthy - Scola would be in my lineup.

What does it all mean? It means I really don't know who is going to win this thing. Many of the categories are still close and many of them are close between contending teams. So, it's not just one contending team moving up 13 points - it's another contender is likely losing 13 points at the same time. 26, 30, or 40 point swings depending on the category. This JBL title will come down to the final night. I feel it.

I see that Seoul has decided to play Nene and Ray Allen this week. Nene missed tonight's game but Seoul really didn't have any other options. Will Allen play? And news from the late game is that Luke Ridnour sprained his ankle and did not return. His status for the rest of the week is not yet known. If he misses time that would be another big blow for the Seoul squad.

Juan, yet again, got All-Star-like performances from Mike Dunleavy and Gordon Hayward. What FA signings these guys turned out to be! Dunleavy is shooting 65% and 66% from FG% and 3PT% over his last 10 games. Holy shit Batman.

Golden saw the return of Nikola Pekovic to the floor tonight. He played sparingly but put up 17pts in 19 minutes. He shot 7/8 from the floor and I could use his FG% and rebounds. The bad news is now I have 4 bench guys and will have to drop someone since the trade deadline has passed. I have until Sunday to make that decision and it won't be easy because of the quality guys I have to choose from right now. The mostly likely candidates to be jettisoned will be Shannon Brown and Bismack Biyombo.

French didn't have Mike Conley tonight as he's nursing an ankle injury. Memphis plays 5 games this week and next so I'm sure Hildy is hoping for a speedy recovery. And the promising play of JJ Hickson came to a halt to tonight (4pts 5ebs). This is JBL law. If you have a guy on your bench and he's lighting it up - the moment you activate him - he stinks. And vice versa. If you are starting a guy and you've had enough of his shitty performances and you bench him - then he'll light it up immediately. Simple stuff really. JBL law.

As much as I wanted to plan for 4 foreign keepers for next season (Gortat, Ilyasova, Pekovic, and Biyombo) - I have developed a love for little Isaiah Thomas. He had another nice game tonight for the Kings (17pts, 5/0 ATO, 1 stl, 3/7 downtown). And he's $1 buck. His last 10 games? Tendex over 20. So, maybe it's big foreigners and 1 small PG next season?

Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make. We've all heard that saying before. Well, I'm really thankful for that expression because I offered Brussels Jarrett Jack and Brandon Bass for Zach Randolph. Tubby Zach had 10 points and 3 rebounds tonight while shooting 2/9. Because Tim turned that trade down I had to focus on getting another big man and acquired Scola. Funny how these things work out sometimes.
