Over-Rated Shooting Guards...

The old saying that SG's are a "dime a dozen" still rings true for me. Don't get me wrong, there are some fabulous SG's in the Association...it's just that, in my mind, the top tier aren't really that much better than the middle tier.

Sure, Wade and Kobe really stand out in the SG group - but after that, you can find some pretty good value all the way down into the 20's...

I have Leo Barbosa ranked as the #26 shooting guard from last season...that's a guy who put up 14ppg, shot 48.2% from FG and 37.5% from downtown with good ATO and steals...That's good value at #26.

Now, compare that value to the Center position....the #26 ranked center was Erick Dampier. Ugh.

So, with so many quality SG's...who is really over-rated? Well, I believe there are 2 guys who get too much hype for the numbers they produce.

Let me introduce you to Kevin Martin and Michael Redd.

First off, they are both injury prone. Sure, they can both flat out score - which is always a good thing. But let's break down how/if they help your Fantasy team...

Kevin Martin - the guy can score 50 on any given night. There aren't too many guys who can do that. Now, what's the bad news?? Did you know, of the 30 NBA teams starting shooting guards - that K-Mart is the ONLY one of them with a negative ATO. That's right, 138 assists to 146 turnovers last season. Odd. Everything else he does just OK...other than 3pt% he doesn't wow you in many categories. That being said, if he can stay healthy, he's a top 10 scorer in the league. All that being said, I just think he gets over-hyped for what he does in the Fantasy world. We'll see what he goes for on JBL draft night this season...

Michael Redd - Another injury prone player who gets overpaid by Idaho every season. The last 3 years he has been drafted by Idaho for $37, $39, and $55 bucks (back in 06/07). That's a steep price for someone who never gives you 82 games. Coming into this season, I wonder how Redd will take to his new-look Bucks squad. Gone is Richard Jefferson and Charlie V. Redd has to be the focus of the offense now. Is that a good thing? Can he handle the pressure? And if you are the opposing team - aren't you going to do everything in your power to stop Redd and make guys like Joe Alexander, Amir Johnson, Andrew Bogut and Luc Mbah a Moute try to beat you?? Redd is a really good player but doesn't have any other WOW categories other than scoring.

So...how much do they go for on draft night??? With K-Mart I'm going to say $35 bucks and with Redd, I'm going to say he goes in the low $40's this season.
