I've noticed a lot of trade offers where other owners are trying to sell you on the name...have we not reached a point where it's time to look at the numbers rather than the name? Granted, there are other factors to be considered when looking at a player - but I think the numbers one is being slightly ignored.
Take this example of these 2 guards:
Player A - 13.8PPG, 3reb, 46.6% FG, 48/27ATO, 8 steals in 9 games, doesn't shoot 3's
Player B - 16.4PPG, 4reb, 46.4% FG, 14/20 ATO, 7 blocks in 7 games, doesn't shoot 3's
Which one of those players would you want on your Fantasy team. Neither one has eye-popping numbers. Both appear to be serviceable Guards. One has better ATO and the other scores a bit more. There would be definite debate as to which guy would better help your team.
Other factors to consider when comparing the 2 players?
Is one player in a slump?
Is one player playing over this head?
Is one player only playing because of injury to another player?
All valid points and things to consider.
But when does the mirage become reality? When can we no longer say - that guy is playing over his head?
In this example, player A is Derrick Rose and player B is Dahntay Jones. If I asked you now which player you'd rather have....every single industry expert would say Derrick Rose. Now, I'm not saying I would take Jones over Rose either (due to factors mentioned above) but I think there is a strong case that Jones is a serviceable player in Fantasy now. You can't just say, "well, it's Dahntay Jones, he sucks.". That argument does not cut it in Fantasy hoops.
I think some of JBL owners are relying more so on the name than the numbers. Take a look at the most recent trade with Gomes/Hawes for Elton Brand. That has to be the explanation when we see Timbo going after Elton Brand - because his numbers do not warrant a 2 for 1 deal. So, was it the name - Elton Brand - that warranted Timbo to give up 2 serviceable forwards?? Of course it was. Would Timbo have traded Gowes/Hawes for Yi Jianlin???? NO WAY. But you know what - Yi has better numbers so far than Brand.
So...boys, if your reading, look at the numbers too...that's all I'm saying.
