What maybe is worth noting in the Crowder release is that Golden has signed Alexey Shved for the 3rd time already this season. I'll admit it, I fell in love with Crowder's pre-season performance. His hustle. His willingness to do all the dirty work for what looked like a talented Mavs roster. Well, that roster is really struggling right now and despite Crowder starting the last 2 games he just really hasn't found his way.
So, with that, Golden turns to just another white kid in Minnesota. Alexey Shved really shouldn't be on a JBL roster just yet though. He's far too inconsistent and takes WAY too many 3 pointers. But something about this kid makes me like his potential. Maybe it's because Rick Adelmann has never really liked playing rookies (look at Derrick Williams last year and remember he was the #2 pick overall). But for some reason, it seems Adelmann is very comfortable playing this 6'6 rookie from Russia. Sure, Roy and Budinger are hurt so Shved has more chance to play - but it seems he's earning the trust of his coach. Take tonight for example. In a close 6 point loss to the Clippers, Shved played 36 minutes, more than anyone else on the entire team. I'm willing to stash the kid on the bench and wait and see what happens when Rubio comes back in a few weeks. He's not back on Monday (Tuna) but he could be back in a few weeks. I think a backcourt pairing of Rubio and Shved could be interesting to watch. In order for Shved to be active in Golden he has to stop shooting so many 3's. Coming into tonight exactly half of his shots (50%!!!) were from deep and he was only making 25% of those. Too much. So, rather than wait on Jae Crowder I've decide to wait on Shved.
Other observations from Week 4...
- OJ Mayo has cooled off with a 3rd straight average performance tonight
- Chauncey Billups returned to the starting lineup tonight. It's perfect he's in French because all injury risk players seem to be in French this season
- Seoul is becoming more and more impatient with his under-performing roster
- The Kok, who seems to think I don't give him enough credit in this space, continues to hover close to 800 points. He's doing this with a mostly no-name roster and awaits the hopeful return of John Wall and Andrew Bynum. This team could still be dangerous in the long run. Depending on Bynum of course.
- Arctic continues to rise in the standings behind a very deep and talented roster. A resurgent Tyreke Evans certainly helps that. Ibaka, Faried, and Tony Parker are all playing extremely well right now too. Crikker is getting some nice numbers from his big free agent signing Robin Lopez as well.
- Montreal sits in 3rd tonight as he is now the best shooting FG% team in the JBL. His weakness is rebounds (9th).
- Brussels is currently in 4th and lays claim to the best shot blocking team in the JBL. He's only 10th in FG% and he can thank Byron Mullens and the Beez for doing the most damage there. I can say I'm still very impressed with those Blazers on his roster as Lillard and Batum continue to be stat stuffers. And on December 8th me and Timmy will be at the Blazers game watching them up close. Can't wait.
- Yuma has cooled off dramatically after a quick start. Injuries and a lack of scoring is hurting the roster currently. Yuma is the lowest scoring team in the JBL and isn't getting much from Pau Gasol these days (13ppg).
- I like Maui's pick up of Reggie Evans. Maui is actually the best scoring team (per game) in the JBL but is lacking rebounds. Reggie's last 5 games for rebounds read like this 12-14-10-14-10. Even though he doesn't score much Maui can certainly use the rebounds. Don't forget, Maui will be adding even more scoring when Unibrow and Dirty Dirk get active.
- One night after Bargnani made his impressive debut in Idaho - he sits out tonight due to an injury. Frustrating.
- General Greivis Vasquez has been rock solid this year for Bangkok. Despite his lack of steals Vasquez has put up very good numbers in the other PG categories including a very impressive 4.0 rebounds per game.
- Kevin Durant scored 37 tonight. His fantasy dominance continues this season. Compare these 2 players and tell me which one is the better Fantasy player?
Player A - 13 Games, 25ppg, 8reb, 84/31 ATO, 11 steals, 13 blocks, 53/44 %'s
Player B - 15 Games, 26ppg, 9reb, 67/55 ATO, 28 steals, 23 blocks, 50/44 %'s
A is Lebron and B is Durant. Yummy.
- Anderson Varejao is playing like a monster right now. 14.5 PPG, and 14.9 rebounds per game! He also shoots 53%; his ATO is 45/24 and he has 21 steals in 14 games. OK, sure, he doesn't block shots (only 6) but look at those other numbers. The question remains - can he stay healthy?
- Serge Ibaka's improved offensive game is also worth mentioning. He's up to 15ppg while grabbing almost 8 boards and blocking over 3 shots per game. Oh, he's also shooting 59%! Ibaka's in the last year of his JBL contract so he'll be back in the Auction next season. I wonder how much he'll go for with those improving numbers?
- And who are some of the potential top keepers for next season? Is it too early to start looking at cheap guys? How about the $1 gem in Brussels - Patrick Patterson. He's having a nice breakout season in Houston. Or what about Kevin Seraphin ($1) in the Wack? He flew under the radar at Auction because of Okafor and Nene but he's carving out a solid role in DC.
- Idaho has 2 stud keepers for next year in James Harden ($13) and Derrick Rose ($3). Yes, Rose is a potential keeper based on the current JBL constitution which states a player who is drafted at Auction can be protected (players acquired through free agent bidding must play 25 NBA games to be eligible). The question is does Idaho leverage Rose to improve his team for this year or does Idaho hold onto him and use him to build for next year? The key factor here is that Idaho can't afford to finish last, or even in the bottom 3, if he wants to be able to build around Harden and Rose. And of course, that doesn't even factor in Ricky Rubio and his $15 dollar salary. Tough decisions ahead in Idaho.
- One of my favorite mid-range keepers so far has to be Brook Lopez. MBB picked him up at Auction for just $26 bucks. I know he doesn't rebound (6.6) at all but how does a Center who can average 20ppg, shoot 54%, and block 35 shots in 13 games go for just $26 bucks? He's a bargain for $31 bucks in my opinion.
- Chandler Parsons ($4) is another player who has really surprised me with his early season play. He's averaging 16ppg, 7reb, 49/30 ATO, 15 steals, and shooting 48/42 in 14 games. That's really solid production for a $4 dollar player. Can he maintain it all season? Let's wait and see on him.
- Tyson Chandler is shooting 57/81 (70%) so far this season. For teams that need help in FG% he could certainly be a worthwhile target.
- Marcin Gortat misses Steve Nash. A lot. After getting 5 double-doubles in his first 8 games this season - he hasn't done it since (a span of 8 games). His last 2 games - 6/3 and 6/4 debacles. He's in Gentry's doghouse me thinks. Mind you, that whole PHX team has been a mess lately. It would not surprise me if they consider a coaching change there. Gentry appears to be losing this crew already. I hope he can turn things around as Golden needs those blocks and boards.
- My hopes of a Ersan Ilyasova resurgence were crushed tonight when Scott Skiles held him to 13 minutes and Ersan went scoreless. What to do with this dude? Hold him? Drop him? I can't trade him because the only offer I've received was Isaiah Thomas. Mind you, Tuna also offered me Thomas for Gortat, Duncan, and Westbrook I think. Ersan's potential is just too great to simply release him at this stage. Now, if my team was lower in the standings and struggling more I would have to consider dropping him. However, right now, he can sit on the bench and hopefully he'll find his mojo again. Patience is running thin on this dude.
- How long before Detroit turns to Andre Drummond in the middle? What are they waiting for? I was wrong on this kid (and Waiters) about his ability to succeed at the NBA level.
- Josh Smith had a Josh type of night. That's the Josh that Juan de Fuca was hoping they acquired last week. Meanwhile, Rusty had a so-so night for OKC. Tonight's head to head battle goes to Smith in ATL.
- Bismack Biyombo lost his spot in the Wack tonight. This on the night that he goes 6-8-4 and plays 27 minutes. Those blocks (20 on the season now) will probably attract some attention on the wire.
Well, that's enough rambling for one night...until the weekend boys.
