As I'm typing this Golden has 1055 points, French 1031 and Juan 1012. It's close. French and Juan had monster nights. Pretty much everyone on their rosters went off. Let me start with the French Lick squad. He had 8 man games and scored 179 points! That's a 22ppg average. Unreal. Check out these guys - Lawson 25, Teague 19, Terry 27, Vasquez 20, Anderson 26/16, Bosh 22/15, Hickson 22, and Johnson 18. Insane man. Insane.
And then Juan de Fuca put up these numbers - Afflalo 26, Hayward 24, Nate 30, Dirk 40/9, West 22/10, Durant 24, Boozer 16/13. Again, crazy. It's pretty clear these guys know it's the JBL playoffs and they all brought their A-games.
For Golden - pretty good numbers tonight. The big surprise again was Kevin Seraphin and his 21pts, 13reb, and 5 blocks. Nice FA signing. And after a 2 week wait Jrue Holiday made his Golden debut and posted 18pts and 8/0 ATO.
So, the categories are starting to bunch up. Let's break them down with the thought of night to night movement. Sure, teams might be able to move up more over the next 10 days - but for now - I'm going to focus on the immediate potential moves.
3PT% - French has room to move here as he's at 35.8% and Montreal is at 35.9%. And Golden is just 0.2% ahead of Seoul in 3PT% - that could change with one bad (or good) night.
ATO - Golden vs. Maui is close. 1.488 vs 1.491. Maui does have Chris Paul though. This will be interesting to watch on a nightly basis.
BLKs - Golden is just 8 blocks behind Seoul now and the Brothers squad has a lot of medical signs on that roster. Juan is just 6 blocks behind French too. Very close.
FG% - French, Juan and Arctic are all shooting 45.9%. I don't have to tell you how much I'm cheering for Arctic in this category.
STL - Juan is just 4 steals behind Seoul.
That's potentially a lot of movement in just one night. We have 9 nights of action to go and I fully expect some jockeying to occur over the next 9 days.
Some other random thoughts...
- Bill Simmons predicted the Warriors would go into 'tank' mode (in order to protect lottery balls) and Simmons also said that David Lee would come up with some sort of injury. Low and behold - he did. Crazy.
- The one guy in GS who hasn't been shut down and continues to impress me is Klay Thompson. Amazing what a kid can do when he doesn't have to fight for shots with Curry and Ellis. Klay's last 10? 17ppg and shooting 46% and 48% from downtown. Nice.
- Montreal has 8 medical signs on their roster. I wonder if Marko and David realize the season is still going? They've been awfully quiet.
- Chilliwack has pulled into 4th for the moment ahead of Seoul. With this placing comes a couple of things - the 4th keeper and bragging rights. This is big for Benny as I actually think he has 4 keepers while I'm not sure Seoul has even 1 keeper these days. It certainly appears that Seoul will not be winning a 4th straight title.
- And Arctic has pulled into 8th ahead of the Kok. Rick's fall from grace continues with the injury news to Dwight Howard. Arctic could land a high spot in the off season power rankings with the 3rd keeper and the late season charge. And I have to say - Arctic's answers to the JBL questionnaire - top notch. Absolutely brilliant. Slightly warped. But still brilliant.
- Idaho has also been on a charge lately and has a firm grasp in the top 8. Is it possible that Idaho actually got better with the gutting of his team to land Bynum? Could Bynum really be that good? It's possible.
- And Yuma is another team that has performed very well over the last few weeks. The injury to Kobe is costly as it will likely cost him the 20 points in the PTS category. And yes, Golden is rooting for a Black Mamba return to make it interesting there.
- And I even saw Brussels post on the chat board tonight. The Muscles squad dropped to 184 points tonight at one point (ultimately they finished the night at 197). Timmy wonders where it all went wrong and wasn't really looking for an answer. But really, I thought I would look up the answer and see what Brussels points totals were over the weeks of the 2011/12 season. Check these out...
Week 1 - 631 points
Week 2 - 635
Week 3 - 540
Week 4 - 521
Week 5- 463
Week 6 - 439
Week 7 - 357
Week 8 - 262
Week 9 - 249
Week 10 - 249
Week 11 - 262
Week 12 - 249
Week 13 - 236
Week 14 - 223
Week 15 - 223
Week 16 - 210
The answer to 'when did it all go wrong'? Week 3. It was downhill from there. The lowest points total in the JBL (CBS era and quite possibly of all time) is 217 by the Dildo Baggins squad. It appears the Brussels team could break the record. We'll all watch anxiously I'm sure over the next 9 days to see if Tim can get into the record books. I've checked the old binders of JBL info from the mid 90's that I still have and even the likes of Dave Davies, Rob Nelson and Jeremy Wilson all finished higher than 217.
I also want to say Congrats to Tim on the birth of his 2nd child - Kai Alexander Pershick. And because of this historic event - the JBL is officially renaming the 'Mendoza' line - 'the Kai line'. As you all know the Mendoza line is a baseball term used to describe those hitters who can't get over the .200 batting average mark. As we in the JBL know - Timmy's Brussels squad has struggled this season and without a doubt it's because of all the time he's had to spend preparing for Kai's birth. So, as we watch Brussels struggle to try and get over 200 points - we will now refer to the 200 point level as the 'Kai line'. Good luck to Brussels trying to get over the Kai line. (thanks to Chilliwack for the idea)
That's it for tonight....9 long nights still to go.....
